What Really Happens When You Sign Up for a Consultation with My Italian Family
Your Italian Citizenship Journey Starts Here
If you're considering Italian citizenship by descent, you've probably discovered that the process can be overwhelming. Between changing laws, genealogy research, document collection, translations, apostilles, court challenges, and consular procedures, it's often difficult to know where to begin.
That's exactly why My Italian Family exists.
For more than 20 years, we have helped qualified applicants navigate the path to Italian citizenship with the support of our team of American and Italian attorneys, genealogists, certified paralegals, translators, research specialists, and project managers located in both the United States and Italy.
One of the most common questions we hear is:
"What actually happens when I schedule a consultation?"
The answer is simple: no pressure, no obligation, no sales gimmicks. Just a friendly conversation about your family history and whether you may qualify for Italian citizenship.
Here's exactly what to expect.
Step 1: Schedule Your Free Consultation
The process begins with our free 15-minute phone or Zoom consultation.
You can schedule your consultation at a day and time that is convenient for you directly through our website.
This call is specifically designed for people who are interested in a professional, all-inclusive, start-to-finish citizenship service.
During scheduling, you'll answer a few basic questions about:
- Your Italian ancestry
- Your citizenship goals
- Your budget
- The type of assistance you are seeking
- Any specific questions you would like answered
This information helps us make the best use of our time together.
Step 2: Complete the Family Intake Form (Optional, But Highly Recommended)
After booking your consultation, you'll receive a confirmation email containing our Family Intake Form.
We strongly encourage you to complete this form before your appointment.
Why?
Because it allows us to begin investigating your lineage before we even speak.
The more information you provide, the more meaningful your consultation can be.
Helpful information includes:
- Names of Italian ancestors
- Dates of birth
- Dates of marriage
- Approximate immigration dates
- Naturalization information
- Places where family members lived
Don't worry if you're unsure about some details.
Approximate dates and spellings are often enough for us to begin preliminary research.
Many clients are surprised to learn that the ancestor they thought qualified them for citizenship is not actually the most promising path. Our research often uncovers alternative eligibility routes that families never knew existed.
Step 3: We Conduct Preliminary Research
Before your consultation, our team reviews the information you've provided.
One of the most important questions we try to answer is:
Did your Italian-born ancestor naturalize as a foreign citizen, and if so, when?
This single question can determine whether citizenship was passed down through your family line.
We may review:
- Census records
- Naturalization records
- Immigration records
- Family lineage information
- Historical citizenship laws
This preliminary analysis helps us identify potential citizenship pathways before your consultation even begins.
Step 4: Your Free Consultation
Now comes the fun part.
During your consultation, you'll meet with one of our Citizenship & Genealogy Consultants.
This is not a sales presentation.
It's a conversation.
We genuinely enjoy discussing family history and often discover fascinating stories and connections during these meetings.
During the consultation, we'll:
Discuss Your Family History
We'll review your Italian lineage and determine whether a potential citizenship path exists.
Explain Eligibility Requirements
We'll discuss how Italian citizenship law applies to your specific family situation.
Review Potential Obstacles
If we identify issues that could affect your case, we'll explain them clearly and honestly.
Explain Our Services
We'll walk you through how our process works and what professional support may be available.
Answer Your Questions
Many applicants arrive with questions about:
- Eligibility
- Costs
- Timeframes
- Consulates
- Applying in Italy
- Court cases
- The 1948 Rule
- Recent citizenship law changes
We'll address as many of those questions as possible during the consultation.
What If I Qualify?
If our preliminary analysis indicates that you likely have a path to Italian citizenship, we'll invite you to move to the next stage of the process.
This is called the Discovery Call, where we take a much deeper dive into your family’s history, eligibility pathway, documentation requirements, and project strategy.
What If I Don't Qualify?
Not every applicant who contacts us will qualify for Italian citizenship, and that is perfectly okay.
If our research indicates that there is no viable citizenship path, we will tell you honestly. We do not believe in encouraging clients to spend money on projects that have little or no chance of success.
In some cases, applicants come to us believing they do not qualify, only for our research team to uncover a different qualifying lineage or legal pathway. In other cases, we may recommend waiting for legal developments, pursuing a court challenge, or simply conclude that no path currently exists.
Our goal is not to sign every prospective client. Our goal is to provide accurate information so you can make informed decisions.
Step 5: The Discovery Call
The Discovery Call is significantly more detailed than the initial consultation.
Before scheduling this appointment, we require a completed Family Intake Form for every potential applicant.
At this stage, our team performs deeper research into:
- Your lineage
- Applicable citizenship laws
- Documentation requirements
- Potential challenges
- Jurisdiction-specific requirements
- Estimated project scope
Unlike the introductory consultation, we block approximately 45 minutes for this meeting.
This gives us plenty of time to:
- Review eligibility findings
- Discuss documentation requirements
- Explain project timelines
- Answer detailed questions
- Discuss pricing
- Determine the best application strategy
Many companies charge for this level of consultation and research.
We do not.
Our Discovery Calls and associated research are completely free.
By the time we reach the Discovery Call, we have often already invested several hours of research into your case. We do this because we believe prospective clients deserve meaningful answers before deciding whether to move forward.
Ready to Find Out If You Qualify?
A surprising number of applicants who contact us either underestimate or overestimate their eligibility. The only way to know for sure is through a proper review of your family history and documentation.
Book your free consultation today and let our team help you determine the best path to your Italian passport.
Step 6: Receive Your Personalized Project Proposal
Following the Discovery Call, typically within 48 hours, we prepare a formal proposal if a citizenship pathway exists.
This package includes:
- Proposed service agreement
- Eligibility overview
- Detailed project scope
- Pricing information
- Estimated timelines
- Explanation of services included
- Explanation of services not included
Transparency is extremely important to us.
We believe clients should fully understand exactly what they are purchasing before making any commitment.
Take All the Time You Need
Once you receive your service agreement and project proposal, it's completely normal to have additional questions. In fact, most clients do. Italian citizenship is a significant investment, and we want you to feel fully informed and comfortable before making any decisions.
Unlike many companies that become difficult to reach after a consultation, our team remains available and highly responsive by email throughout the decision-making process. If there is anything you don't understand about your eligibility, documentation requirements, timeline, pricing, or the service agreement itself, simply ask.
There is no pressure and no rush. We will continue answering questions and providing clarification for as long as necessary to ensure you fully understand the process and feel confident in your decision. Our goal is not simply to sign clients. Our goal is to build long-term relationships founded on trust, transparency, and expert guidance.
Step 7: Begin Your Project
When you're ready to move forward, you'll:
- Send an electronic commission statement authorizing us to begin the project
- Submit the finalized intake form with any additional vital event details
- Pay your deposit
Once these steps are completed, we officially open your project and you become the newest member of My Italian Family!
Step 8: Meet Your Dedicated Project Manager
Within approximately two weeks of signing up, your project is assigned to a dedicated Project Manager.
Behind the scenes, our Operations Team immediately begins building the foundation of your case. During this onboarding period, we are reviewing your family information, developing the project strategy, preparing authorizations, and organizing the first research and record requests that will drive your project forward.
Once this preparation phase is complete, your Project Manager will reach out and begin working directly with you as your primary point of contact throughout the project.
Your Project Manager will:
- Coordinate document acquisition
- Monitor progress
- Answer questions
- Manage communication
- Coordinate with researchers, translators, attorneys, and government offices
Your Project Manager is not a generic customer service representative. They become deeply familiar with your family's lineage, documentation portfolio, application strategy, and project history. This allows us to provide personalized guidance throughout the process rather than forcing you to repeatedly explain your case to different people.
Rather than dealing with multiple departments, you'll have one person who understands your case from start to finish.
Understanding Project Timelines
Italian citizenship is not a quick process. Most applicants underestimate the amount of time required to properly research a family lineage, obtain records from government archives on two continents, correct discrepancies, secure apostilles, complete translations, and prepare a compliant application portfolio.
Depending on the complexity of the case, the document collection and preparation phase alone often takes a year or more. This is one of the primary reasons many clients choose a professional service rather than attempting to navigate the process alone.
After the portfolio is completed, applicants must still navigate appointment availability, consular or court processing times, and final recognition by the Italian authorities.
One of the most important things to understand is that much of the timeline depends on third-party government offices in both the United States and Italy. While we work diligently to move your project forward as efficiently as possible, some aspects of the process are ultimately beyond anyone's control.
We believe in setting realistic expectations from the beginning so that clients understand both the opportunities and the challenges involved. Italian citizenship is often a marathon rather than a sprint, but for many families, the long-term benefits make the journey well worth the effort.

Why Clients Choose My Italian Family
Italian citizenship is not just about obtaining records.
It's about understanding:
- Italian citizenship law
- Genealogical research
- Consular procedures
- Italian bureaucracy
- Court processes
- Documentation standards
Over the past two decades, we have helped thousands of families navigate this process successfully, from straightforward consular applications to some of the most legally and genealogically complex citizenship cases imaginable.
One piece of feedback we hear repeatedly from prospective and current clients is that we provide a level of knowledge, transparency, and education that is difficult to find elsewhere in the industry.
Clients frequently tell us that we are:
The Most Knowledgeable
Our team often identifies historical facts, naturalization records, legal nuances, documentation strategies, and alternative eligibility pathways that others overlook. Because Italian citizenship law is rooted in both historical and modern legal principles, success often depends on understanding details that may not be obvious from a simple family tree.
The Most Transparent
We believe in presenting both opportunities and risks honestly. If we see a potential problem, we will tell you. If a case involves uncertainty or litigation risk, we will explain it. We also provide detailed pricing and clearly define the scope of work so that clients understand exactly what is and is not included before making a decision.
The Most Informative
Italian citizenship law continues to evolve, and many applicants struggle to keep up with changing legal interpretations, consular practices, court decisions, and legislative developments. We invest significant time in monitoring these changes, speaking with our attorneys, and educating our clients so they can make informed decisions throughout the process.
This is particularly important during periods of legislative change, when inaccurate or outdated information can lead applicants to incorrectly assume they do or do not qualify for citizenship.
Many of our clients consult with multiple providers before choosing My Italian Family. They often tell us that our consultations are more thorough, our explanations more detailed, and our approach more honest than what they experienced elsewhere. We take great pride in that reputation and work hard every day to earn it.
We Are Not Afraid of Difficult Cases
Some of our most successful projects began with clients who were told by other providers that they did not qualify, that their records were too complicated, or that the case was impossible.
Our team regularly handles:
- Missing records
- Contradictory documentation
- Name discrepancies
- Court cases
- 1948 Rule cases
- Denial of Justice matters
- Cases involving recent changes to Italian citizenship law
While not every complex case can be solved, we pride ourselves on finding solutions where others see obstacles.
When you work with My Italian Family, you're not hiring a single researcher.
You're gaining access to a team of professionals including:
