About the State of the Family Record

The Anagrafe Office (Office of the Census or Demographics Office) is the repository of this record called Stato di Famiglia Storico (Historical State of the Family).  This document shows the composition of the family unit which includes the following information:

  • Full name of the head of the household
  • Full names of all members living in the same household
  • The relationship of each member to the family
  • Civil status
  • Place of birth
  • Date of birth (possibly date of marriage as well)
  • Occupation, etc.

NOTE: State of the Family Records started to be recorded before the 1900s mostly in the North of Italy but only after 1930 in the Center and South of Italy. This is because the Anagrafe Office was created around that time; by then your ancestors might have already migrated away and no information is available on their family.
