If you are a do-it-yourselfer (or planning to be) you may have questions related to the Italian Citizenship qualification requirements and/or documentation needed to be presented to the Italian Consulate, to the town hall in Italy, or to the Italian Courts for 1948 Cases. My Italian Family is offering several Telephone Consultations to assist you throughout the process. If you would like to order Italian Vital Records, you can do so by selecting the document(s) you need from the list below.

This is Step 1 of our "Start to Finish" Program, designed for people who are seeking support with their Italian Dual Citizenship Application. During this 60-minute call, we will review your entire family tree, perform FREE preliminary research to complete and/or confirm your family chart, see if we can determine if you do qualify, render our opinion as to your qualifications, establish a pursuit path, and build a personalized list of all required documentation you will need to apply for Italian Dual Citizenship.  We will also answer all your questions and discuss how to overcome any issues or pitfalls that you may encounter. Once you determine if you qualify (or authorize us to research proof of Naturalization), you can then proceed with My Italian Family's "Start to Finish Program". If you sign up for the entire "Start-to-Finish" Program, the Consultation Fee will be credited against the entire cost of putting together your document portfolio. To get started, select this Option and click "Continue to Next Step" at the bottom of the page.

Fee: $200

It is not uncommon to discover that first and last names are different from the original spelling found in the Italian birth record. Inconsistencies can also be found in the date of birth; US records (birth, marriage, death and naturalization records) may list different birthdates. Although US records can generally be amended, with the exception of the Naturalization records that cannot be amended for someone who is deceased, it helps (and often it is required) to have the Italian town hall issue a certification known as Certificate Positive/Negative, or Certificate of Esatte Generalita’. With this Certifcation, the Italian town hall will certify that there was only one person (listing the original first and last name, date of birth, place of birth, parents’ names and Birth Act No.) born there, while other individuals with incorrect name spellings (listing exactly which misspellings are found in the US documents) and incorrect birth dates (listing exactly which other dates are found in the US documents) were NOT born in that town.

NOTE: This Certification does not replace the requirement of “amending” US records.

Fees: US $250 processing fee to request each individual Birth, Marriage, Death and Certificate of Citizenship Records. Additional copies are $10 each. REMEMBER: The Italian Consulate will not return the Italian documents you submit with your application. You can buy one or more additional copies if more than one family member is applying with you or to keep as an heirloom.

Frequently Asked Questions

If you are an American and you're not sure which consulate covers your state, FOLLOW THIS LINK to find which consular office has jurisdiction over the State where you reside.

A.I.R.E. (Anagrafe Italiani Residenti all’Estero) is the registry of Italians residing abroad. For people of Italian descent pursuing Italian Dual Citizenship jure sanguinis, AIRE’s enrolment is a right and a duty. It provides access to consular services abroad and allows the exercise of some important rights, such as the right to vote and the right to renew IDs and travel documents. Enrolment is free of charge.

NOTE: More and more Italian Consulates require that applicants for Italian Dual Citizenship fill out the AIRE Registration Form and have it ready the day of their appointment. You can download the enrolment form by visiting the Italian Consulate that has jurisdiction of the State where you reside.

You will be contacted by the Italian authority through which you submitted your application for citizenship. Though this may vary from country to country, you will probably receive an email or a letter stating that you have been recognized an Italian citizen and what is the procedure in order to receive an Italian passport.  You will be registered in the Registry of Italians Resident Abroad (A.I.R.E.).

A.I.R.E. was established by Law no. 470/1988 and keeps track of the changes in citizenship status, address, marriage, birth and death of Italian citizens. A.I.R.E. enrolment is obligatory for Italian citizens living abroad for more than 12 months and for Italian citizens residing abroad either as a result of being born there or having obtained Italian citizenship through Ancestry (jure sanguinis), marriage or other.
