Frequently Asked Questions
In order to authorize a Family Research Project or to order Italian Records, you need to provide the essential information of our Italy-born Ancestor, specifically:
Date of Birth/Marriage/Death
EXACT Town of Birth/Marriage/Death
His/Her Parents'Names (if available)
If you don't have this information, you may want to visit our Research U.S. Records Section where you can get FREE advice on how to acquire the missing information.
REMEMBER: All family documents in Italy are ONLY maintained in the EXACT town where your ancestor was born.
If you don't see a Research Option that fits your needs, we can tailor one just for you. Examples of custom research projects include researching:
- A specific number of Generations Back (not covered by our standard Research Options)
- Two Family Lines at the same time
- Your Family in two or more Ancestral Towns
- Older records (such as Notary Records, Census Records, i.e. Catasto Onciario, Riveli, etc.)
- U.S. Records (i.e. Immigration records, Census records, Naturalization Records, or Military registration records here in the U.S.)
For more information and to discuss the details of your request for a personalized estimate, call us at 1-888-472-0171 (Option 3), we can help you.
The timeline is always tied to which Research Option a customer chooses. The timeframe goes from a minimum of 6-8 weeks to much longer depending on the number of sources involved in the research. A research project that involves access to church archives may take longer to be completed.
Research results will be made available in both hard copy and digital format. You will receive a hard copy Family Book in the mail which includes a flash drive with the digital version of the reports, photographs of the documents and of the town of origin (depending on which research option you selected) + a Gedcom file for your future use and sharing with other family members
Before sending one of our professional researchers to your town of origin, we always perform a preliminary research to make sure your Italian Ancestor was indeed born in the town you provided. All our Research Options are for one family line in one town only. It may happen, although not very often, that the family was originally from a different town; in that case we will determine with you what would be the additional cost to move our research efforts to another location. In the event you choose not to proceed, we will charge you for the number of generations we were able to research while onsite in the town you listed in your order.
Yes, we do. Please call us at 1-888-472-0171 (Option #3) to discuss options based on what your research goal(s) and budget are.
You can email us at [email protected] listing your Order Number in the subject line.
In order to prevent fraud and to comply with the requirements of the existing privacy laws (Law no. 675/1996 implementing EU Directive 95/46 on Personal Data Protection), more and more town halls require a signed authorization letter by means of which the direct descendant authorizes us to request family documents on his or her behalf, and a copy of the direct descendants’ valid photo ID (passport or driver’s license). These documents will be forwarded to the local town hall together with a copy of our valid photo ID.
