The Italian Genealogical Group is a non-profit organization incorporated under the laws of the State of New York, dedicated to furthering Italian family history. It was founded by June DeLalio (Certified American Genealogist who is also part of my Italian Family network of genealogists) back in 1995.

They meet on the 2nd Saturday of every month from September to June. In the spring of each year the IGG also hosts an All-Day Seminar in which nationally and internationally known speakers are invited to speak. In addition, they publish a newsletter 10 times a year that contains articles to help you with your research. A database is maintained of the surnames and areas in Italy that our members are researching. A revised edition is published once each year.

New members also receive a very useful packet of information pertaining to Italian and general genealogy. Membership dues are as low as US $ 20. Each meeting features a speaker who is knowledgeable about some aspect of Italian or general genealogy. Some of our speakers have been:

Trafford R. Cole Phd. of Padua, Italy (well-known Italian genealogist, who is also part of my Italian Family network of genealogists) John Celardo, the Assistant Director of the National Archives Regional Archives, Northeast Region Brian Anderssen, the Executive Director of the Castle Garden and Ellis Island Foundation and presently Assistant Director of the Municipal Archives, New York City John P. Colletta, author of Finding Your Italian Roots Various experts on Computer Genealogy, Family History Center Materials, and in-depth research in Italy.

While you may not be able to attend meetings, you will find detailed coverage of a meeting in the newsletter following the meeting. Although attendance at monthly meetings draws people mainly from the New York/New Jersey metropolitan area, membership in the organization is world-wide.

Latest Activities of the IGG

John Martino is acting as the IGG coordinator with the Jewish Genealogical Society, Inc. to the project that they has undertaken to computerize the indexes to Naturalization records in the Brooklyn County Clerk's Office. The project will include Declarations of Intention and Petitions for Naturalization completed from 1907 to 1924, a period in which a significant number of immigrants were naturalized in Brooklyn.

The Jewish Genealogical Society has been granted approval by the Kings County Clerk to copy the index records at this court and have made them available to other researchers for computerizing. Once these records are digitized they will be available to anybody with a computer and easily searched. The project will start with the 1923-24 index volumes (Volumes 22A & 22B) and are working back to 1907. At the same time, we are computerizing the book indexes to the Declarations of Intention starting from 1907 to 1915. Some of this work can be done on your home computer. There aren't only Jewish names in these records. As a matter of fact, most of the names are not Jewish and these records contain Irish, Italian, German, Norwegian, Swedish, Polish, you name it and that nationality is listed. We have all used indexes in our research and are very appreciative of those wonderful people that took the time to put them together. Here is your opportunity to give a little back. There are 500 names in each volume and there are over 100 volumes. If each of us took one or two volumes, this project would be done in a very short time. It is a simple routine. Each entry consists of reading a handwritten name and a page number and entering it into a list. Once completed, this database of names would be available to all researchers via the Internet.

To get a copy of one of these volumes, you can e-mail John Martino at JohnM16881@aol.com or call him at (516) 368-8174.
