(Non-profit Association) Founded by the Istituto Araldico Genealogico Italiano (The Italian Heraldic and Genealogical Institute)member of the Confédération Internationale de Généalogie et d'Héraldique. The School is linked to the Escuela de Genealogía Heráldica y Nobiliaria of the Instituto Salazar y Castro of Madrid and credited to The Institute of Heraldic and Genealogical Studies of Canterbury. The Course of the Academic Year 1999/2000 will be held in Bologna from 5 January 2000 through 5 July 2000, each Wednesday, from 6.00 p.m. to 8.00 p.m. Three more Saturdays will be devoted in order to complete the program. The students must be members of the Italian Institute of Heraldry and Genealogy (membership fee is 90,000 Italian Liras/US$50); the school fee is 300.000 Italian Liras/US$ 165. The courses: The School of Genealogy, Heraldry and Documentary Sciences has a duration of four years and has currently the following courses: 1st Year - Propaedeutic course of Genealogy and Family History with some elements of heraldry.One year lasting course, at the end of which a diploma will be issued. No previous studies certificate is required for the admission. The course, addressed to amateurs, has as a purpose the study of the genealogy (genealogy history; family history; genealogical computerized systems; elements of psycho graphology; biology and genetics; structure and characteristics of the main genealogical documents; location of genealogical documents; the results of a genealogical research) and some elements of heraldry. The aim of the Course is to provide the necessary instruments so to achieve:
2. A genealogical historical research; 3. The drawing up of the family history; 4. The layout and graphic representation of the genealogical tree. 2nd Year - Course of Heraldry and Documentary Sciences. An upper school certificate is required for the admission to the 2nd year, together with the diploma in Genealogy and Family History with some elements of heraldry. The course, addressed to amateurs, has as a purpose the study of heraldry (the shield and its representations; shield's ornaments; heraldry usage's: art and decoration; computerized systems; heraldic rules) and the study of elements of: archival studies; bibliology; chronology; diplomatics; human genetics; historical-political- ecclesiastical geography; graphology; numismatics; onomatology; toponymy; paleography; sigillography; symbology and iconography; history of standards. 3rd Year - Course of Nobiliary Sciences. One year lasting course, at the end of which a diploma will be issued. The diploma in Heraldry and Documentary Sciences is required for admission to the 3rd year. A good knowledge of heraldry is requested (heraldic capacity); nobiliary genealogy; legal jurisprudence genetics elements; history of nobiliary law; nobiliary genesis and philosophy; evolution and structure of nobility in the world; history of the orders of knighthood. 4th Year - Course of Historical-Demographic-Social Sciences. One year lasting course, at the end of which a diploma will be issued. The diploma in Genealogy, Heraldry and Documentary Sciences - Nobiliary Sciences is required for admission to the 4th year. A good knowledge of applied genealogy is requested; elements of history of castles; ceremonial; historical demography; legal jurisprudence of genetics; sociology and history of the institutions; history of uniforms. Rules for application The application must be presented, together with curriculum vitae and two small pictures, to the secretary of the school. The access to the courses is reserved to full age people (18 years old); no previous studies certificate is required for the admission to the 1st year, whereas for the next years an upper school certificate is required. The board of teachers must approve the admission, and the school can accept or refuse the applications.The current fee must be paid at the admission. Each course lasts six month, with oral classes, written training and practical exercises, according to the program. ATTENDING STUDENTS Oral as well as written classes, will be held on Wednesdays, from 6.00 p.m. to 8.00 p.m. at the Italian Institute of Heraldry and Genealogy, via C. Battisti n° 3 - 40123 Bologna (Italy). At the end of each course the students must attend a final examination. In order to be admitted, the students must attend 2/3 of the classes and must prepare a paper related to one of the subjects of the course. CORRESPONDENCE COURSE NEW: Semi annual courses starting on January 1st and on July 1st. The persons living outside Bologna, with all the above-mentioned qualifications, can be exonerated from attending the classes that, in such a case, will be replaced by other didactic modalities. They will receive, at the end of each class, a test to be answered and sent to the school; furthermore they must prepare a paper related to one of the subjects of the course.
