Research your family in Italy

Dual citizenship applications need supporting Italian documents, such as birth, marriage and death records.
Please note that My Italian Family will ONLY process requests to Town Halls and to State Archives, but NOT to Parish Churches. If you are interested in researching Parish Archives, we do recommend that you hire a professional genealogist in our Research Section.

Italian family records are not available online. Town Halls, State Archives, and Parish Churches keep their records in physical archives, which can either be viewed in person or by relying on the officials' s help to perform the research. Please note that there are a lot of discrepancies in the way the sources have archived records in the past.

  • Mailing your request to the Italian Public Source
  • One follow-up of your request by communicating (fax or phone) with our contact name in the office
  • Translation of the record/s from Italian into English
  • Shipping & Handling (Shipping to US addresses are by USPS certified mail)

(If you are interested in overnight shipping, please send us an email at records@myitalianfamily.com, and we will let you know the additional costs involved)

  • US $100 processing fee to request each individual birth/marriage/death and military record.
US $50 processing fee for each additional copy of birth/marriage/death and military record requested.
  • US $100 down payment to request a Historical State of the Family (Stato di Famiglia Storico). Even though there is no standard procedure, some Town offices can charge up to an amount that can reach $15 to $20 per name listed in the document. If a family were composed on average of 10 names or more, it would cost you approximately: US $150 to $200 additional processing fee per document.

When your request is forwarded to the appropriate government office, your credit card will be charged or your check cashed, depending on your form of payment.

It is hard to say how long it may take to receive the document requested: usually it's about 4 to 8 weeks or more. Italian public sources will be solicited once after 4 weeks. After that, if we still have not received a reply, you can choose to resubmit a new request for the amount of US $100 per document ordered.

DISCLAIMER: My Italian Family does not guarantee the result of the request that will be sent to Italian sources. In acting purely as an intermediary, it still relies on the work of officials who may or may not cooperate. Records may be kept in separate archives, may have changed location, or suffered damages, thus heavily reducing the chances of success.

The law regulating civil vital registration records allows the release of EXTRACTS of the original birth/marriage/death acts (Estratto per Riassunto dell'Atto di Nascita/Matrimonio/Morte) with complete details. This is the format requested by the Italian Consulate to process dual citizenship applications.
